Fruities save the day for refugee families

As part of the Ulumbarra Foundation’s commitment to the Bendigo community, complimentary tickets are provided to increase access to the performing arts for diverse community groups. In March, 2024, members of the Karen community attended a performance of Tempo by the Flying Fruit Fly Circus at the Ulumbarra Theatre.

Tempo tells the story of a highly distinguished musician who was unable to find the orchestra for a performance. Fortunately, the Fruities were ready to save the day (and create chaos with the concert grand piano). With no dialogue and plenty of gasp-inducing action, Tempo appealed to every age.

Since May 2007, Karen refugees have been arriving in Bendigo from refugee camps located in Thailand and Myanmar, escaping relentless persecution and execution by the military rule in Myanmar.

Established in 2010, Karen Culture & Social Support Foundation has been supporting Karen and Burmese people to relocate, find accommodation and start their journey in Australia. The community centre celebrates traditional culture including food preparation, cultural festivals, dancing opportunities and collaborating with other cultural groups in Bendigo.
