Foundation partnership elevates Bendigo’s orchestral profile and impact

Five years ago, the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra (BSO) outlined a strategy to become the premier orchestra in regional Australia by fostering strong community support, attracting top musicians, and incorporating ambitious symphonic works into its repertoire. As its partner, the Ulumbarra Foundation helps BSO realise its ambition through tax-deductible contributions to the foundation.

Since the partnership began, Ulumbarra Foundation funding has delivered incredible outcomes for the BSO including:

  • 70 high-quality orchestra chairs, now housed at the Ulumbarra Theatre, and available for use by other musical groups.
  • 70 new portable music stands for performances, also stored at the Ulumbarra Theatre, enhancing the orchestra’s setup for various events – thanks to the generosity of the McKern family in memory of the late Gordon McKern
  • enriching the BSO’s concert experiences through engagements with internationally renowned performers, such as Tamara Anna Cislowska
  • support of the BSO’s talented and inspirational Artistic Director, Luke Severn, who has brought fresh vision and creativity to the orchestra.

“The Ulumbarra Foundation’s contributions—both financial and through the facilitation of tax-deductible donations—make it a cornerstone supporter of the BSO,” said BSO’s President Nigel McGuckian.

“The partnership has elevated the profile and impact of the orchestra in the region. It serves as a compelling model for fostering similar collaborations in the future.

Ian and Edith Dyett have been generous donors to the arts and other community in Bendigo for many years. Through donations to the Ulumbarra Foundation, Ian and Edith are supporting the BSO’s Artistic Director role for three years, allowing the BSO to continue to create opportunities for musicians to play, and for local and regional audiences to experience the joy of live symphonic music.
